India Key Driver of Asia-Pacific Air Traffic Growth: IATA

Synopsis: India emerges as a major contributor to Asia-Pacific aviation growth, with IATA highlighting the country’s expanding air travel market, rising connectivity, and growing role in driving regional passenger traffic demand.

India is playing a significant role in driving air traffic growth across the Asia-Pacific region, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The global aviation body highlighted India's expanding aviation market as a major contributor to the region’s growth, reflecting the country's rising demand for air travel, expanding airport infrastructure, and increasing airline capacity.

Speaking at a briefing during the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Sheldon Hee, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Asia-Pacific, noted that India has been a key contributor to the region’s aviation growth story over the past several years. The country’s strong economic performance, growing middle-class population, and rising connectivity have fueled sustained growth in passenger traffic and airline operations.

IATA projects that the number of air passengers in the Asia-Pacific region will increase from 1.7 billion in 2024 to 4.1 billion by 2044, representing an addition of 2.4 billion travelers over the next two decades. India is expected to remain one of the largest contributors to this growth, supported by increasing domestic travel demand and expanding international connectivity.

The association also emphasized the importance of continued investments in aviation infrastructure to accommodate future demand. Airport development, modernization projects, and improvements in air traffic management systems will be critical as passenger volumes continue to rise. Across the Asia-Pacific region, airport infrastructure spending is projected to exceed $1.2 trillion over the coming years to support anticipated growth.

India’s aviation sector has witnessed rapid expansion in recent years, driven by fleet additions, new route launches, and increasing participation from both established carriers and emerging airlines. Government initiatives aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and expanding airport capacity have further strengthened the country’s position in the global aviation landscape.

Despite challenges such as supply chain disruptions, geopolitical uncertainties, and rising operational costs affecting the global aviation industry, IATA remains optimistic about long-term growth prospects in the Asia-Pacific region. The organization believes India will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of air travel and supporting the region’s emergence as the world’s fastest-growing aviation market.
