Tajikistan and Finland are strengthening bilateral and EU-linked cooperation as Brussels deepens engagement with Central Asia, with priorities spanning development, connectivity, security, trade and regional cooperation.
Tajikistan and Finland have discussed strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation within the European Union framework, highlighting Dushanbe’s growing engagement with European partners amid the EU’s broader strategic focus on Central Asia. The discussions took place during a meeting between Tajikistan’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Farrukh Hamralizoda and Finland’s newly appointed Ambassador Maria Agren.
Hamralizoda received a copy of Agren’s credentials and congratulated her on her appointment. The two sides reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and prospects for further cooperation, including engagement through the EU and other international organisations. Finland has maintained development cooperation with Tajikistan since 2009, with initiatives covering areas such as sustainable economic development, water management, climate resilience and responsible business practices.

The meeting comes as EU-Tajikistan relations continue to gain institutional momentum. The 12th EU-Tajikistan Cooperation Committee met in Brussels in June 2026, while Tajikistan also participated in the 13th EU-Central Asia High-Level Political and Security Dialogue in July. These engagements have provided platforms for discussions on regional security, economic cooperation, connectivity and wider EU-Central Asia priorities.
A key element of the relationship is the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Tajikistan, which was initialled in July 2025 and remains an important framework for expanding political and economic cooperation. The EU has also identified Tajikistan as an important partner for initiatives involving green and digital transitions, water management, infrastructure and regional connectivity.
For Finland, engagement with Tajikistan forms part of its wider Central Asia policy, which is closely aligned with the EU’s regional strategy. Helsinki has sought to support stability, sustainable development, stronger institutions and regional cooperation across Central Asia. The latest diplomatic engagement therefore carries significance beyond bilateral relations, reinforcing Finland’s role in supporting deeper European engagement with the region.

As Tajikistan advances cooperation with European institutions, the next stage will depend on translating diplomatic engagement into concrete progress on trade, development, connectivity, mobility and regional security.
