UAE Tightens Entry Rules, Suspends Visas From Ebola-Hit Countries

Synopsis: UAE suspends new visa issuance for nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of Ebola and strengthen public health preparedness.

The United Arab Emirates has announced the suspension of new visa issuance for nationals of three Ebola-affected African countries, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, as part of precautionary measures aimed at safeguarding public health. The decision was jointly announced by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). The suspension will take effect from June 6 and may be extended depending on developments related to the Ebola outbreak.

Under the new measures, travelers arriving from the three affected countries will not be permitted to enter the UAE, including those traveling through transit routes involving these nations. However, authorities clarified that entry will be allowed for individuals who have remained outside the listed countries for more than 21 consecutive days before arriving in the UAE. The move is intended to minimize the risk of cross-border transmission while maintaining vigilance against potential health threats.

UAE authorities emphasized that cargo operations between the UAE and the affected countries will continue without disruption. Transit flights will also remain operational, ensuring that international aviation and trade activities are not significantly impacted by the restrictions. The government noted that the measures are targeted specifically at public health protection and do not affect broader transportation and logistics networks.

Officials stated that the UAE will continue to closely monitor global health developments in coordination with local and international partners, including relevant health organizations. The authorities will regularly assess risks associated with the Ebola outbreak and implement additional measures if necessary in line with approved health standards and risk assessments.

The latest decision reflects the UAE’s proactive approach to disease prevention and emergency preparedness. By introducing precautionary travel restrictions, the country aims to strengthen national readiness and protect public health while responding swiftly to emerging global health challenges.
