Synopsis:   South Korea and Kazakhstan explore a comprehensive economic partnership agreement while expanding cooperation in energy, supply chains, infrastructure, digital technology, and green industries to strengthen bilateral economic ties.

South Korea and Kazakhstan are advancing efforts to deepen their economic partnership, with both countries exploring expanded cooperation in energy, supply chains, digital technology, and infrastructure development. The discussions take place amid growing interest in strengthening economic ties between East Asia and Central Asia and enhancing resilience against global market uncertainties.

The issues were discussed during the 11th Korea–Kazakhstan Joint Committee on Trade, Economy, Science and Technology Cooperation held in Astana. South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Kim Jung-kwan, met with Kazakhstan’s Minister of Industry and Construction, Yersaiyn Nagaspayev, to review existing cooperation and identify new opportunities for bilateral engagement.

A key focus of the meeting was the potential conclusion of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which both sides view as an important mechanism for boosting trade and investment flows. Officials agreed that a CEPA could provide a stronger institutional framework for economic cooperation and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Energy security emerged as another major topic of discussion. Against the backdrop of heightened volatility in global energy markets, partly driven by tensions in the Middle East, the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector, including crude oil supplies. Both governments emphasized the importance of stable energy partnerships to support economic growth and enhance supply chain resilience.

The discussions also addressed support for South Korean companies operating in Kazakhstan, particularly those involved in the automotive, electronics, and industrial plant sectors. Kazakhstan reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating business activities and creating a favorable environment for foreign investors. In return, South Korea pledged support for Kazakhstan’s efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure, including upgrading aging power plants and expanding electricity generation capacity.

Beyond traditional sectors, the two countries agreed to broaden cooperation into emerging areas such as the digital economy, smart technologies, environmental sustainability, and eco-friendly industries. Officials also explored ways to encourage greater participation by South Korean firms in Kazakhstan’s urban development and infrastructure projects.

During his visit, Minister Kim also held discussions with Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov, further underscoring the importance of energy collaboration in the bilateral relationship. Speaking after the meeting; Kim noted that South Korea and Kazakhstan are increasingly expanding cooperation beyond conventional fields such as natural resources and construction into innovative sectors including digital technology and green industries. He emphasized that both sides will continue consultations on the issues discussed and work toward stronger economic integration ahead of the inaugural Korea–Central Asia Summit scheduled for September.

Analysts view the latest discussions as a significant step toward strengthening economic ties between South Korea and Kazakhstan, with cooperation expected to play an important role in supporting regional connectivity, energy security, and sustainable development.
