  • Indonesia and Japan sign cooperation agreement on energy security and mineral resource development partnership.
  • Collaboration focuses on critical minerals like nickel supporting electric vehicles, batteries, and clean energy technologies.
  • Partnership also explores nuclear energy cooperation, strengthening sustainable supply chains and regional energy security.

Indonesia and Japan established a stronger strategic partnership through their signing of an energy and mineral resources cooperation agreement.

The Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum in Tokyo served as the venue for the agreement, which both countries used to explore ways of enhancing their critical minerals and clean energy technology partnership.

The partnership develops sustainable energy systems, which enable countries to achieve their low-carbon technology objectives.

The two nations established a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) which includes two main areas of cooperation between them. Indonesian authorities have extended an invitation to Japanese government bodies and private enterprises to take part in the country's strategic mineral resource exploration and processing and management activities.

The Southeast Asian nation controls approximately 43 percent of global nickel reserves while possessing substantial bauxite and tin and copper and rare earth element resources. The manufacturing process of batteries and electric vehicles and clean-energy technologies relies on these minerals as essential components.

The partnership aims to enhance international supply chains which handle materials needed for energy transition. The two countries intend to develop sustainable and reliable systems for critical mineral supply chains by utilizing Indonesia's natural resources and Japan's technological and industrial expertise.

The two countries will work together on nuclear energy to develop and use low-carbon technologies while they enforce safety requirements.

Officials from both nations declared that international collaboration has grown more important because of current geopolitical conflicts and increasing global energy requirements.

Indonesia and Japan will continue their discussions on energy matters which will include liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply and coal supply chains together with their nuclear and mineral partnerships under the Asia Zero Emission Community initiative.

The new cooperation framework will enhance bilateral relations and boost regional energy security while it speeds up sustainable energy technology development throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
