Russia and Malaysia are strengthening their energy partnership as Moscow agrees to provide long-term supplies of petrol, oil, and gas to Malaysia. The agreement aims to enhance energy security and provide greater stability in Malaysia’s fuel supply arrangements.
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announces that Russia has committed to ensuring reliable and continuous energy supplies for Malaysia through a long-term cooperation framework. The move is expected to reduce uncertainty associated with short-term or annually renewed supply agreements.
Anwar says the agreement will provide stronger assurance to Malaysians by creating a more predictable energy supply system. He explains that preparations are underway to finalize the long-term arrangement, with both sides having already agreed on the main principles of cooperation.
The implementation process is currently moving toward the final stage, with company representatives involved in reviewing details and completing the necessary documentation. Anwar states that the agreement is expected to be signed after final discussions between relevant parties.
The energy cooperation is discussed during Anwar’s two-day working visit to the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit. During the visit, the Malaysian Prime Minister expresses appreciation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting stronger energy cooperation between the two countries, particularly involving Malaysia’s national energy company PETRONAS.

Beyond energy, Malaysia and Russia are also expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, finance, and the halal economy. Both countries are exploring opportunities to deepen economic relations and increase business engagement.
Anwar highlights that Malaysia currently does not face major challenges regarding oil and gas availability. Although global energy prices may experience fluctuations, the country’s supply position remains stable.
He notes that previous concerns related to fuel availability, including diesel and gas supplies, have improved significantly. Malaysia now has sufficient stocks, with diesel supply conditions showing improvement compared with earlier challenges.
The Prime Minister also emphasizes Malaysia’s willingness to support regional energy needs, including assisting countries facing supply difficulties. He mentions that Malaysia has explored opportunities to help nations such as Timor-Leste through available resources.
The Russia-Malaysia energy partnership reflects both countries’ efforts to strengthen economic resilience amid changing global energy conditions. Long-term cooperation in fuel supplies is expected to contribute to greater stability and support Malaysia’s broader energy security objectives.
The agreement also demonstrates growing engagement between Russia and Southeast Asian nations, with energy cooperation becoming an important foundation for expanding diplomatic and economic relations. Through continued collaboration, Malaysia and Russia aim to build a stronger and more sustainable partnership.
