Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing visits Malaysia on October 7–8 for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with repatriation, ASEAN engagement and economic cooperation among the key issues.

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing is visiting Malaysia from October 7 to 8 for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with the two sides expected to discuss key issues including the repatriation of Myanmar nationals, ASEAN engagement and bilateral cooperation. The official visit comes at Malaysia’s initiative to maintain direct engagement with Myanmar.

According to Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry, the discussions are expected to cover the voluntary, dignified and safe repatriation of Myanmar nationals of all ethnic groups who are staying in Malaysia illegally. The two leaders are also expected to review ongoing efforts under ASEAN mechanisms and discuss regional stability and humanitarian assistance.

The visit follows Malaysia’s continued engagement with Myanmar under the ASEAN framework. As ASEAN chair in 2025, Anwar met Min Aung Hlaing twice as part of Malaysia’s efforts to engage Myanmar. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan also visited Myanmar in April and October 2025 and again in May 2026.

Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Min Aung Hlaing will hold bilateral talks with Anwar and attend the Myanmar-Malaysia Business Dialogue, where he is expected to deliver opening remarks. The visit will also focus on consolidating existing friendly relations and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation between the two governments and peoples across economic, cultural and other sectors.

Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Malaysia on today with a delegation of ministers and officials. He was received at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by Malaysia’s Investment and Trade and Industry Minister Johari Abdul Ghani, who is serving as the minister-in-attendance. An official welcome ceremony and bilateral meeting with Anwar are scheduled for October 8.

The repatriation issue has gained importance ahead of the visit. Malaysia has been working with Myanmar on the return of Myanmar nationals, while the policy has drawn criticism from the United Nations and rights groups over concerns about conditions and safety in Myanmar. Nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals were recently returned, while Malaysia has said thousands more have agreed to return in stages.

Malaysia has said Myanmar remains an integral part of ASEAN and that it will continue supporting regional efforts toward peace, reconciliation and humanitarian access. The latest visit is therefore expected to provide another platform for direct dialogue between the two governments while addressing bilateral and wider regional concerns.
