Lavrov Meets Modi; Talks Focus on Ukraine, West Asia

Synopsis: Sergey Lavrov meets Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss Ukraine, West Asia tensions, energy cooperation, and broader India-Russia strategic relations during the BRICS summit.

Sergey Lavrov called on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi during his visit for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, with both sides discussing major global developments including the Ukraine conflict, the escalating situation in West Asia, and bilateral strategic cooperation.

According to official statements, the discussions focused on regional and global issues of mutual interest, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine and rising geopolitical instability in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective path toward resolving international conflicts and reducing regional tensions.

Lavrov briefed the Prime Minister on progress in India-Russia bilateral cooperation following the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025. The meeting also reviewed developments in trade, energy cooperation, connectivity, defence collaboration, and broader strategic engagement under the India-Russia “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.”

The visit comes at a time when India is closely monitoring the fallout of the West Asia crisis on global energy markets, supply chains, and maritime security. Russia has continued assuring India that existing energy supply agreements involving crude oil, gas, and coal will remain unaffected despite increasing geopolitical uncertainty and sanctions-related pressures.

Lavrov’s India visit is also linked to the ongoing BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted under India’s 2026 chairmanship. The expanded BRICS grouping is currently discussing issues including energy security, economic resilience, global governance reforms, and the impact of geopolitical conflicts on emerging economies.

India continues to maintain a carefully balanced diplomatic approach by engaging with all major global powers while advocating peaceful negotiation and strategic autonomy. Analysts believe the Modi-Lavrov meeting highlights the continued importance of India-Russia ties in areas such as defence, nuclear cooperation, hydrocarbons, and multilateral coordination despite rapidly evolving global alignments.

The interaction also underscored India’s growing diplomatic role within BRICS and the broader Global South as countries seek coordinated responses to geopolitical instability, energy volatility, and shifting international power dynamics.
