Jaishankar Meets Iran’s Araghchi Amid BRICS West Asia Talks

Synopsis: S. Jaishankar meets Abbas Araghchi during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting 2026 in New Delhi to discuss West Asia tensions, energy security, regional stability, and strategic India-Iran cooperation.

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi amid escalating tensions in West Asia and growing concerns over regional stability, energy security, and global trade disruptions. The bilateral engagement comes as the ongoing conflict involving Iran continues to dominate discussions among BRICS member nations.

The meeting focused on the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia, disruptions in energy supplies, maritime security, and regional connectivity initiatives. Reports indicated that both sides discussed the impact of the conflict on oil markets and trade routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, which remains critical for India’s energy imports.

Araghchi’s visit to India is part of Tehran’s diplomatic outreach to key BRICS members as Iran seeks broader international engagement during the ongoing crisis. The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, hosted under India’s 2026 chairmanship, is expected to address major global challenges including energy volatility, geopolitical fragmentation, and reforms in multilateral institutions.

According to reports, Iran has been urging BRICS nations to adopt a stronger collective position regarding the conflict in West Asia. However, internal divisions within the expanded BRICS bloc, particularly differing positions among member nations, have complicated efforts to issue a unified statement on the crisis.

The discussions between Jaishankar and Araghchi also highlighted the longstanding strategic relationship between India and Iran, particularly in areas such as energy cooperation, connectivity projects, and regional trade. Analysts believe India is attempting to maintain balanced diplomatic engagement while safeguarding energy security and maritime trade interests amid increasing instability in the region.

The BRICS meeting is being closely watched globally as member countries attempt to coordinate responses to rising oil prices, economic uncertainty, and intensifying geopolitical tensions linked to the West Asia conflict.
