  • Project strengthens Papua regional digital connectivity resilience significantly
  • Cable links Indonesia directly with Papua New Guinea

Indonesia has officially launched the Pukpuk Submarine Cable System, marking the Asia-Pacific region’s first cross-border undersea cable directly connecting Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG). The project is expected to significantly strengthen regional digital connectivity while improving network resilience and economic integration across Eastern Indonesia and neighbouring Pacific regions.

The submarine cable was inaugurated in Jayapura, Papua, by PT Telkom Indonesia through its international arm, Telin, in collaboration with PNG Data. The system creates a new digital corridor linking Jayapura in Indonesia with Vanimo and other key locations in Papua New Guinea, extending connectivity further into the wider Asia-Pacific network.

Officials described the project as a strategic milestone for regional telecommunications infrastructure. Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Angga Raka Prabowo, stated that the initiative aligns with the country’s broader goal of accelerating inclusive digital transformation and ensuring equal connectivity access for Eastern Indonesia.

The Pukpuk cable system introduces a second independent international connectivity route for Papua, complementing the existing Sulawesi-Maluku-Papua network. This route diversification is expected to enhance digital infrastructure reliability, reduce service disruptions, and improve internet resilience in border and remote regions.

Beyond telecommunications, the project also carries broader economic and geopolitical significance. Improved digital connectivity is expected to support regional trade, digital businesses, education, healthcare access, and cross-border cooperation between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Industry analysts note that submarine cable infrastructure is becoming increasingly critical as Asia-Pacific economies rapidly expand their digital ecosystems.

The launch comes amid growing global investment in subsea communication networks, driven by rising internet usage, cloud computing demand, and AI-led digital transformation. Indonesia, strategically located along key maritime routes, is emerging as an increasingly important hub for regional digital infrastructure and international data traffic.

Telkom Group stated that the project reflects its commitment to ensuring no region is left behind in the digital era. The collaboration with PNG DataCo is also expected to deepen bilateral cooperation and open new opportunities for future connectivity initiatives across the Pacific region.

Industry observers view the Pukpuk cable as a landmark development for Southeast Asia’s digital infrastructure landscape. As governments and telecom operators continue investing in resilient cross-border connectivity, projects of this scale are expected to play a crucial role in supporting long-term economic growth and regional integration.
