Laos and Indonesia are working to deepen their long-standing bilateral relationship following an official visit by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane to Jakarta. The visit which took place at Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono's invitation was dedicated to strengthening diplomatic ties between the two ASEAN member states through improved political and economic and cultural and strategic cooperation.
The two sides conducted their talks to assess their progress through almost seven decades of diplomatic relations while they searched for future collaborative opportunities. The officials reported that the ties between their countries had developed through ongoing high-level meetings and personal exchanges and through their expanding connections in essential economic fields. The leaders showed their commitment to ASEAN unity and regional cooperation through their need to address changing global and regional security threats.
The negotiations centered on economic collaboration which both nations agreed to implement by increasing trade and investment activities in their most promising economic sectors. The parties discussed various possibilities which included multiple areas such as infrastructure development and agricultural expansion and tourism growth and human resource training programs and industrial partnership initiatives.

The Lao delegation held discussions with Indonesian business leaders from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to promote private sector collaboration and to discover investment opportunities.
The two countries also discussed plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, with celebrations expected in both Vientiane and Jakarta. The leaders believed that these events would create stronger cultural bonds between their countries while making their people better understand each other. The two parties examined whether they could advance their existing bilateral relations into a higher level of strategic partnership which would benefit both nations.
