ASEAN and Canada are looking to deepen their strategic partnership, with Vietnam positioned as an important bridge between the two sides. Cooperation is expected to expand across trade, investment, digital technology, energy and regional connectivity.

ASEAN and Canada are looking to deepen their strategic partnership, and Vietnam is becoming a key link in the chain to broaden economic and diplomatic ties between Southeast Asia and Ottawa. The cooperation is part of the increasing trend of strengthening cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, technology and regional development.

In recent years, Canada has been stepping up its involvement with ASEAN, recognising Southeast Asia as a key area for economic diversification and strategic cooperation. Meanwhile, ASEAN is continuing to build partnerships with key partners to facilitate trade, investment and regional connectivity.

Vietnam's role in the relationship is important due to its developing economy, expanding manufacturing base and its wide involvement in regional trade agreements. It also offers opportunities for Canada to expand its commercial relationships with other ASEAN members through its geographic and economic connections.

Trade and investment will continue to be a key aspect of the relationship. Canadian firms can benefit from opportunities in sectors such as infrastructure, clean energy, agriculture, technology and financial services, and ASEAN markets can benefit from Canadian expertise, capital and advanced technologies.

Another space where there is potential for more collaboration is digital transformation. The ASEAN countries are building digital economies and enhancing regional connectivity, which will provide opportunities for collaboration on digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Energy and sustainability are two areas that are gaining more attention in Canada and ASEAN nations, and countries in the region are looking for ways to secure energy and reduce their environmental footprint. These two groups can explore working closely on issues like renewable energy, critical minerals and clean technologies.

Vietnam might really help in bringing businesses together and making business-to-business relations stronger. The country's manufacturing power and integration into the region's supply chains make it a popular destination and also grant access for Canadians to Asian markets on a much larger scale.

Besides, the two-way relations between the broader partnerships are of a very strategic nature. While Canada is gradually raising its profile in the Indo-Pacific, ASEAN remains focused on open, inclusive and rule-based regional systems. That means closer contact will also allow for more coordination and joint work of the members in matters of stability and common economic interests in the region.

As a result, Vietnam can benefit from closer ASEAN-Canada ties through new business opportunities, acquisition of technological know-how and enhancement of export volumes. Then again, through deepening ties with ASEAN, the Canadian side would be better able to tap into one of the fastest-growing areas globally, apart from getting the chance to broaden and diversify its international market relations.
