China, South Korea Deepen Semiconductor Cooperation and Trade

  • China and South Korea boost semiconductor collaboration through Chizhou industrial park.
  • The park fosters joint R&D, chip manufacturing, and integrated circuit testing.
  • Partnership strengthens economic growth and cultural ties between both nations.

The bilateral relationship between China and South Korea is thriving, fueled by enhanced collaboration in the semiconductor industry. Central to this collaboration is the China-South Korea Semiconductor Industrial Park located in Chizhou City, Anhui Province, in eastern China.

In 2023, Chizhou formed a sister-city partnership with Gyeongju, the venue for the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. This connection has since enhanced cooperative initiatives between the two cities.

Before this year's APEC summit, reporters from China Global Television Network (CGTN) and Maeil Broadcasting Network (MBN) went to the park to see how technology promotes bilateral development. Wearing VR glasses, the reporters delved into the complex process of semiconductor chip manufacturing, the foundation of contemporary electronics, in an engaging and accessible manner.

China’s favorable policies and large market have driven swift progress in its semiconductor capabilities, fostering an optimal collaborative ecosystem for partnership. The Chizhou park acts as an essential center, drawing businesses from both countries engaged in chip manufacturing and integrated circuit testing.

“This robot is driving the control part only for testing now. The real products for sales are there,” said Park Hyoun-bin, an electrical equipment engineer.

By collaborating on research and development, the company provides customized solutions in semiconductors and solar energy. “This product is made with bearing parts. We need to insert it from the inside. We need to check it against the drawing,” said Lee Won-gu, a design engineer.

China's vast market creates significant opportunities for South Korean companies, and their involvement enhances local economies. These industrial links also enhance cultural bonds—Lee has developed a preference for hotpot, while Park appreciates various Chinese cuisines.
