Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and US President Donald Trump reaffirm their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation on defence and economic security during a summit in New York. The two leaders meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and hold discussions for more than 30 minutes.
Trump highlights Japan’s economic performance and describes Takaichi as a friend, while expressing confidence in her leadership. Takaichi says the meeting provides an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of the Japan-US alliance to the international community.

Economic security forms a major part of the discussions, with Takaichi pointing to advancing cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and critical minerals. The two leaders also reaffirm their commitment to expanding bilateral economic relations. Takaichi notes that Japan remains the largest investor in the United States for seven consecutive years, underlining the scale of economic ties between the two countries.
Regional developments involving China also feature prominently in the talks. Takaichi and Trump exchange views on economic security and other issues involving Beijing ahead of Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders agree to maintain close coordination as they address developments affecting regional and international stability.
Takaichi also raises the issue of the International Criminal Court during the meeting. She explains Japan’s position, emphasising the importance of the rule of law, as the Trump administration maintains a critical stance towards the ICC. The two leaders hold a candid exchange of views on the matter.
North Korea is another focus of the summit. Japan and the United States reaffirm the importance of coordinated efforts to address Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes. The leaders also exchange views on international financial conditions and related economic developments.

Speaking to reporters after the summit, Takaichi describes the meeting as a timely opportunity to discuss issues concerning China. She stresses that Japan considers stable US-China relations important for the stability of the international community, including Japan.
Takaichi says Japan and the United States will continue to coordinate closely on these matters. The summit therefore reinforces the alliance’s focus on defence and regional security while expanding cooperation in emerging economic-security areas such as AI, semiconductors and critical minerals.
