Synopsis: India and Singapore explore new avenues to strengthen defence cooperation during the Defence Secretary’s Singapore visit, focusing on military collaboration, defence technology, regional security, maritime cooperation, and strategic Indo-Pacific engagement.
India and Singapore have explored new opportunities to deepen bilateral defence cooperation during Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh’s visit to Singapore, reinforcing the growing strategic partnership between the two countries amid evolving Indo-Pacific security dynamics. The discussions were held during the 16th India-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue with Singapore’s Permanent Secretary (Defence) Joseph Leong.
Both sides reviewed the progress of ongoing defence engagements and discussed expanding collaboration across military training, defence technology, capacity building, regional security, and defence industry cooperation. Officials emphasized the importance of strengthening operational coordination and enhancing strategic interoperability between the armed forces of both nations.
India and Singapore share a long-standing defence partnership supported by regular military exercises, policy dialogues, naval cooperation, and high-level strategic exchanges. Existing bilateral engagements include exercises such as SIMBEX between the navies, Ex Agni Warrior between the armies, and joint military training programs involving the air forces.
The latest discussions also reflected the broader elevation of India-Singapore relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Singapore in 2024. Defence cooperation has since emerged as one of the major pillars of the partnership alongside digital technologies, advanced manufacturing, sustainability, and connectivity.

Officials highlighted the shared commitment of both countries toward maintaining regional stability, maritime security, and a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Analysts believe India and Singapore are increasingly aligning on strategic priorities such as maritime cooperation, emerging technologies, cyber security, and resilient regional security frameworks amid changing geopolitical conditions in Asia.
Singapore continues to be one of India’s closest strategic partners in Southeast Asia, with defence relations steadily expanding through institutional dialogues, military exchanges, defence agreements, and operational cooperation. Experts suggest the renewed engagement could further accelerate collaboration in areas such as defence innovation, information sharing, logistics support, and advanced military technologies.
The dialogue also underscores India’s broader effort to strengthen defence partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region while enhancing strategic engagement with ASEAN nations. Observers believe deeper India-Singapore defence cooperation could contribute significantly to regional stability, maritime security coordination, and multilateral defence collaboration in the coming years.
