  • Vietnam and the US discuss deeper collaboration in AI, energy, and trade.
  • Minister Dien urges AI cooperation focusing on training, and technology exchange.
  • Vietnam requests U.S. support on market status and seafood export restrictions.

Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien met with US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jacob Helberg during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The two representatives talked about economic and trade relations between their countries and possible fields for enhanced collaboration. They concurred that although challenges exist, the Vietnam–US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has persisted in flourishing.

Helberg showed significant enthusiasm for fostering cooperation with Vietnam in artificial intelligence (AI), creating resilient supply chains, and advancing new energy options.

Dien highlighted that AI is more than merely a technology; it is a crucial factor in enhancing productivity and boosting national competitiveness. Consequently, Vietnam aims to enhance AI collaboration tangibly, emphasizing training, standards, and technology exchange.

He mentioned that Vietnam has implemented policies that promote innovation and is keen to learn from and collaborate with developed partners such as the US. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is prepared to explore the possibilities for collaborative projects in this area.

Regarding supply chains, the minister emphasized that Vietnam is proactively diversifying its raw material sources for manufacturing sectors to maintain stability and resilience. In the energy sector, Dien informed the US about Vietnam’s energy development policies and urged the US to keep supporting Vietnam in establishing large-scale renewable and new energy projects linked with green financial systems and technology transfer.

He expressed Vietnam’s worries regarding the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s choice to deny equivalence recognition to 12 seafood harvesting methods. This action endangers the jobs of hundreds of thousands of workers, damages the global image of Vietnam’s seafood sector, and restricts supply choices for American consumers, Dien remarked.

The Vietnamese minister also called on the US to contemplate Vietnam's appeal for prompt acknowledgment of its market economy status and to eliminate Vietnam from the D1 and D3 lists, which limit exports of advanced technology goods. The US side acknowledged the proposals and stated that they would be given careful consideration.
