Vietnam expresses readiness to upgrade its Comprehensive Partnership with Canada, expanding cooperation in trade, AI, critical minerals, clean energy, security and Indo-Pacific engagement.
Vietnam has restated its resolve to forge stronger ties with Canada, as it is willing to join efforts to accelerate the process of elevating their Comprehensive Partnership to another level. The gesture demonstrates a sense of political confidence and increasing economic collaboration between the two nations, who intend to tackle new challenges regionally and internationally.
The pledge was made by Vietnam’s Foreign Minister, Le Hoai Trung, in an engagement with James Nickel, the Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam. The discussion revolved around the creation of a roadmap to upgrade their bilateral relationship through enhanced cooperation in key areas that facilitate sustained economic growth and stability.

Vietnam reiterated its belief that its ties with Canada have a high value to Vietnam and welcomed the Indo-Pacific Strategy of Canada, especially Canada’s emphasis on the centrality of ASEAN and recognition of Vietnam as an increasingly important gateway to the region for business activities. It is clear that both parties consider the existing trust and cooperation as a good base for further development of relations.
This proposed enhancement takes advantage of the goodwill generated from the telephone call that took place between Vietnam’s Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, where both sides reaffirmed their willingness to foster bilateral relations and economic engagement.
The economic cooperation continues to be another crucial pillar of the alliance. Vietnam suggested improving cooperation in areas like trade, investment, and valuable industries while devising new means for businesses to get involved in such collaboration. Among the important sectors mentioned by both sides during their discussions are artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, green energy, nuclear energy, education, human resource development, and innovations.
As for Canada, it renewed its pledge of enhancing relations with Vietnam, and new areas for cooperation were mentioned that included the aerospace, financial technology, environment, agriculture, defense industries, and food safety sectors. Furthermore, Canadian Ambassador James Nickel once again emphasized Canada’s recognition of the key role of ASEAN in the architecture of the region.

Both sides committed to expanding high-level interactions, improving existing dialogue formats and creating new institutional structures that can help promote cooperation in emerging areas. Both sides also agreed to work closely in regional and international fora in line with their common approach to multilateralism and international cooperation.
Such discussions highlight the fact that there has been ongoing development in terms of the relationship between Vietnam and Canada, with the two countries having come a long way since the initiation of the Comprehensive Partnership in 2017. With an intention of upgrading the relationship at an early stage, Vietnam and Canada will be able to open up new avenues for cooperation.
