Synopsis: Turkmenistan and Japan discuss expanding business cooperation, planning a 2027 business forum and strengthening collaboration in trade, industry, and GREEN EXPO 2027 preparations.
Turkmenistan and Japan have explored new opportunities to strengthen bilateral business cooperation during a working visit by a Turkmen delegation to Japan. The discussions focused on expanding trade and investment, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and enhancing collaboration ahead of the GREEN EXPO 2027 International Horticultural Exhibition.
The talks involved representatives from the Japan External Trade Organization, the GREEN EXPO 2027 Association, and a Turkmen delegation led by the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan, Mergen Gurdov. Both sides reviewed initiatives to deepen economic engagement and promote long-term commercial partnerships.
A key outcome of the discussions was the proposal to organise a Turkmen-Japanese Business Forum in Tokyo in 2027. The forum is expected to bring together businesses, particularly SMEs, to explore investment opportunities, technology partnerships, and new avenues for trade between the two countries.

The delegation's visit also formed part of preparations for GREEN EXPO 2027, which will be held in Yokohama from March 19 to September 26, 2027. Turkmen representatives participated in plenary sessions, technical visits, and meetings covering pavilion management, logistics, exhibition planning, and arrangements for Turkmenistan's National Day during the event.
Japan has been an important industrial partner for Turkmenistan for several years. Japanese companies have participated in major projects across the country's energy, petrochemical, and fertiliser sectors. Their expertise has contributed to large-scale industrial developments, including gas-processing and manufacturing facilities.
Bilateral economic cooperation gained further momentum during President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's visit to Japan in April 2025. During the visit, organisations from both countries signed agreements covering energy, gas chemistry, transport, environmental technologies, and industrial cooperation, with the overall value exceeding $1 billion.
The two countries have also maintained regular diplomatic engagement. Earlier this year, officials reviewed progress on bilateral agreements and identified strategic sectors for future cooperation, while reaffirming their commitment to expanding economic and technological partnerships.
The latest discussions reflect the growing importance of Turkmenistan-Japan relations. By strengthening business cooperation and collaborating on international initiatives such as GREEN EXPO 2027, both countries aim to create new opportunities for trade, investment, technology exchange, and sustainable industrial development.
