Synopsis: Turkiye and Canada strengthen nuclear energy cooperation through a strategic partnership focused on developing next-generation nuclear technologies, expanding local manufacturing capabilities, and supporting workforce development to build Turkiye's future nuclear ecosystem.

Turkiye and Canada have strengthened their cooperation in the nuclear energy sector through a new strategic partnership aimed at developing a next-generation nuclear ecosystem in Turkiye. The collaboration focuses on advancing nuclear technologies, strengthening local industrial capabilities, supporting workforce development, and promoting long-term cooperation in the country's expanding civil nuclear programme.

The partnership brings together Canadian nuclear technology company Candu Energy Inc., a member of AtkinsRealis, and Turkish engineering firm Prokon Engineering. Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on engineering services, localisation initiatives, supply chain development, and technical expertise to support future nuclear energy projects in Türkiye. The partnership is expected to contribute to the country's broader objective of building a sustainable and self-reliant nuclear energy industry.

A key focus of the collaboration is the development of local manufacturing capabilities and the integration of Turkish companies into the global nuclear supply chain. The partners plan to work with domestic industries to enhance technical capabilities, improve quality standards, and enable local suppliers to participate in future nuclear infrastructure projects. The initiative is also expected to create new opportunities for Turkish engineering firms and manufacturers in the international nuclear sector.

The agreement also emphasises workforce development and knowledge transfer. Through training programmes, technical collaboration, and skills development initiatives, the partnership aims to equip Turkish engineers and technical professionals with expertise in advanced nuclear technologies. Building a highly skilled workforce is considered essential for supporting the long-term operation, maintenance, and expansion of Turkiye's nuclear energy programme.

Turkiye has identified nuclear energy as a strategic component of its long-term energy transition, with the government seeking to diversify electricity generation while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. Alongside the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, the country is pursuing additional nuclear projects and exploring advanced reactor technologies to strengthen energy security and support its net-zero emissions objectives.

Industry representatives noted that international partnerships will play a critical role in accelerating technology transfer and developing a competitive domestic nuclear ecosystem. By combining Canadian expertise in nuclear engineering with Turkiye's growing industrial capabilities, the collaboration is expected to support future investments, strengthen local supply chains, and enhance the country's role in the global nuclear industry.

The partnership reflects the growing cooperation between Türkiye and Canada in advanced energy technologies and underscores the increasing importance of international collaboration in developing safe, reliable, and sustainable nuclear energy solutions.
