  • Trump announces steep tariffs on drugs, trucks, and household goods imports.
  • The pharmaceutical industry and the US Chamber criticize tariffs impacting allies and partners.
  • Tariffs aim to boost domestic manufacturing, raising uncertainty in the global trade outlook.

United States President Donald Trump declared a new series of imposing tariffs, stating that the US will enforce 100% duties on imported branded pharmaceuticals, 25% tariffs on heavy-duty trucks, and 50% tariffs on kitchen cabinets, effective October 1.

“Starting October 1st, 2025, we will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America,” the US President said in a post on Truth Social. According to Trump, the new 100% tariff on all branded or patented pharmaceutical products will be imposed on all imports unless the company has commenced construction of a manufacturing facility in the United States.

The US President announced that he would implement a 50% tariff on bathroom vanities and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture starting next week, with all new Trump tariffs 2025 taking effect on October 1.

He additionally mentioned that the new tariffs on heavy-duty trucks aimed to shield manufacturers from “unfair foreign competition” and stated that this action would help companies like Paccar-owned Peterbilt and Kenworth, as well as Daimler Truck-owned Freightliner.

Trump stated that the new tariffs on kitchen, bathroom, and certain furniture items were implemented due to excessive imports that were negatively impacting domestic manufacturers. The reason for this is the large-scale ‘FLOODING’ of these products into the United States by other outside Countries,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Trump has initiated several national security investigations into possible new tariffs on various products in his second term, creating uncertainty for the global economic outlook and hindering business decision-making.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America criticized new drug tariffs, stating earlier this year that 53% by value of the $85.6 billion in ingredients utilized in medications consumed in the United States was produced domestically, with the rest sourced from Europe and other US allies.

The US Chamber of Commerce requested that the department refrain from enacting new truck tariffs, pointing out that the prime five sources of imports are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland “all of which are allies or close partners of the United States, posing no threat to US national security.”
