Somalia and Kuwait discuss bilateral cooperation, security and regional developments during a meeting between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Kuwait’s Crown Prince on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held talks with Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with discussions focusing on bilateral relations, cooperation and regional security.
The meeting, addressed ways to strengthen relations between Somalia and Kuwait and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The two sides also exchanged views on developments in the region and the evolving security situation in the Middle East.

President Hassan Sheikh highlighted the longstanding relationship between Somalia and Kuwait and stressed the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation. According to Somalia’s presidency, areas identified for greater cooperation include security, diplomacy and development.
The meeting formed part of the Somali president’s diplomatic engagements during the UN General Assembly, where he held discussions with several heads of state and senior officials on bilateral relations, development, peace and security.
Kuwait’s official account of the meeting said Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled received President Hassan Sheikh at Kuwait’s permanent mission headquarters in New York. The Crown Prince conveyed the greetings of Kuwait’s Amir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, along with wishes for Somalia’s security, stability and development. The meeting also covered bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them, as well as regional and international developments.
The talks come as Somalia continues to engage with international partners on security, development and institution-building. At the broader UN gathering, international organisations have also highlighted security developments in the Horn of Africa and the importance of sustained international support for Somalia’s security transition.

Somalia and Kuwait have maintained diplomatic relations and cooperation across political, economic and development areas. The latest meeting provides an additional platform for the two countries to discuss their shared interests and regional issues.
No specific new agreements or financial commitments were announced following the meeting. The Somali presidency said the discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing regional developments and security concerns.
