Russia and Iran are exploring joint oil and gas projects as both countries seek to strengthen energy cooperation, expand bilateral trade and advance strategic ties amid rising geopolitical tensions and restrictions on Iranian energy exports. The discussions highlight their shared interest in expanding economic engagement and coordinating on international energy markets.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held talks in Moscow, on the sidelines of the eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF). According to the Iranian government, both leaders discussed expanding cooperation across several sectors and accelerating ongoing initiatives. Pezeshkian called for stronger collaboration in natural gas production and exports, highlighting the importance of technical expertise, engineering capabilities and coordinated approaches to international energy markets.
Iran produces approximately 280 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, making it one of the world's major gas producers. Pezeshkian emphasised that developments in the global energy sector require closer coordination among producing countries to address market challenges and improve cooperation.
Putin reaffirmed Russia's commitment to fulfilling its obligations under joint projects with Iran. He also stated that bilateral trade turnover increased by 10.4% during the first eight months of 2026. Construction at Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is continuing, reflecting an existing area of cooperation between the two countries.
The talks come as Iran faces mounting economic pressure from US sanctions and restrictions affecting its oil exports. Russia has maintained diplomatic support for Tehran, while both countries have sought to strengthen economic relations and cooperation with other partners.

Moscow and Tehran signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in 2025, providing a broader framework for cooperation. However, major joint energy projects have progressed more slowly, partly because both countries are significant producers of oil and natural gas and compete in international markets.
Beyond energy, the leaders discussed expanding cooperation in science, industry, culture, security and defence. Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for Russia's political and economic support, while both sides emphasised the importance of stronger bilateral engagement.
The meeting also addressed regional developments and energy market stability. Russia expressed concern over tensions in the Middle East and reiterated its interest in diplomatic efforts to ease the situation.
The discussions reflect continuing efforts by Russia and Iran to deepen economic ties, advance joint projects and strengthen their positions in global energy markets. The proposed oil and gas initiatives could provide a basis for further cooperation, although their implementation will depend on subsequent agreements and investment decisions.
