  • Philippines and Japan launch Energy Partnership for secure, sustainable energy collaboration.
  • Initiative promotes renewable energy, low-carbon growth, and climate mitigation.
  • Collaboration includes knowledge transfer, pilot projects, and skills development.

The Philippines and Japan have established a new collaboration focused on enhancing their initiatives to develop a secure and sustainable energy industry. The Philippines’ Department of Energy reported that a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) established the new initiative Energy Partnership with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

“The MoC aligns with the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) principles, emphasising the need for diverse energy options and tailored transition pathways for each country,” the department said.

Energy Partnership guarantees substantial advantages across various aspects. Through the diversification of energy sources and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, the Philippines and Japan aim to improve energy resilience and security, promote low-carbon growth, and aid in climate change mitigation efforts aligned with the Paris Agreement.

This will further facilitate the transfer of technological knowledge and effective methods from Japan to the Philippines, fostering clean-energy investments and aiding skills enhancement in developing energy sectors, spurring economic change and boosting competitiveness in both countries.

The collaboration will include capacity development, knowledge sharing, joint pilot initiatives, and policy discussions, addressing crucial sectors such as renewable energy, grid connectivity, energy storage, hydrogen, ammonia, liquefied natural gas, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage.

The Japan Agency for Natural Resources and Energy and the Philippine Energy Policy and Planning Bureau will act as the main focal points for execution. The collaboration will begin right away and last for four years, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.
