Modi, Dutch Leader Discuss Hormuz Crisis, West Asia War

Synopsis: Narendra Modi and his Dutch counterpart discuss Strait of Hormuz risks and urge peaceful resolution of the West Asia conflict amid rising global energy and trade concerns.

Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius discussed the growing crisis in West Asia, including concerns surrounding the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz, during bilateral talks focused on global energy security, trade stability, and geopolitical cooperation. Both leaders stressed the urgent need for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing regional conflict.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy transit chokepoints, with nearly one-fifth of global crude oil shipments passing through the narrow maritime route. Any disruption in the region is expected to significantly impact global oil prices, energy supplies, shipping costs, and international trade flows.

During the discussions, Modi reiterated India’s support for diplomatic dialogue and regional stability, while both sides expressed concern over the economic consequences of prolonged conflict in West Asia. India, which imports more than 85 percent of its crude oil requirements, remains particularly vulnerable to disruptions in Gulf shipping routes and energy markets.

The talks also covered broader India-Netherlands cooperation in sectors including semiconductors, clean energy, technology, maritime trade, logistics, and resilient supply chains. India and the Netherlands recently agreed to elevate bilateral relations into a strategic partnership focused on advanced technologies and economic collaboration.

Analysts noted that European countries are increasingly coordinating with India on issues related to energy resilience, maritime security, and supply-chain diversification as geopolitical uncertainties continue to reshape global trade dynamics. The Netherlands remains an important trade and investment partner for India within the European Union.

Experts believe the discussions reflect growing international concern regarding the potential economic fallout of continued instability in West Asia, especially for countries heavily dependent on energy imports and maritime trade through the Gulf region
