Malaysia and Spain have confirmed their dedication to increasing agricultural sector cooperation between their two countries which will specifically target the development of new export markets for local agricultural products.

The initiative aims to enhance trade flows and improve the overall trade balance in a mutually beneficial manner. This commitment was highlighted during a meeting between Spain’s Ambassador to Malaysia, José Luis Pardo Cuerdo, and Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mohamad Sabu. The discussions reflected a shared interest in strengthening ties and unlocking new potential within the agriculture industry.

The dialogue focused on two main topics which included capacity building and technology exchange as central elements of their strategic cooperation. The two nations recognized that expert knowledge should be shared between them while they should implement new agricultural methods to enhance their production capacity and environmental protection.

The two nations identified aquaculture and agricultural drainage management as essential areas to work together because these fields help maintain food security and optimize resource efficiency.

The agricultural systems of Malaysia and Spain will undergo modernization through their joint efforts which will also help them deal with new agricultural industry challenges.

The current situation requires industry stakeholders to establish deeper ties while the parties involved advance their policy-based partnerships. The Malaysian government has requested Spain to join the Malaysia Agriculture Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (MAHA) 2026 event which will occur at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang.

The event will function as a platform that enables participants to exchange knowledge establishes business connections and display agricultural research breakthroughs which will enhance their bilateral partnership.

The agricultural trade between both nations has shown continuous development since its inception. The agricultural trade reached a total value of RM2.73 billion by December 2025 when Malaysia exported coffee and cocoa and tea and spices to Spain.

The two countries intend to grow their trade operations while they create new business opportunities based on their existing trade relationship.

The renewed partnership will establish a permanent relationship between the two nations which will strengthen their agricultural collaboration while driving innovation and sustainable growth in their trade relationship.
