Laos and Thailand have established their consumer protection cooperation program because they need to protect consumers in digital marketplaces which continue to expand.

The two countries established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which their governmental agencies signed to enhance their capacity for consumer rights protection through better information sharing and operational coordination.

The agreement was signed between Laos’ Department of Internal Trade under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Thailand’s Office of the Consumer Protection Board under the Prime Minister’s Office.

The partnership seeks to establish a structured framework for cooperation as trade and online shopping continue to expand across Southeast Asia.

The two countries will exchange knowledge and data together with their best practices concerning consumer protection policies and enforcement mechanisms according to the agreement.

Thailand will provide educational materials and legal resources together with consumer protection manuals to help Laos build its regulatory framework. Officials from both sides emphasized that closer cooperation will help address issues such as misleading advertising, unsafe products, and unfair trade practices that can harm consumers.
