Kazakhstan, Brazil Deepen Ties at BRICS Summit in Rio

Kazakhstan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in Rio de Janeiro while visiting for the BRICS Summit. The two officials discussed bilateral collaboration among political, economic, investment, energy, cultural, and humanitarian areas of mutual interest, and participation in international organizations.

Nurtleu remarked that Kazakhstan considers Brazil an important partner and a reliable friend in Latin America, reported the Kazakh Foreign Ministry’s press service. The two diplomats enforced the need for maintaining regular communications and improving communications at the heads of state level. Nurtleu invited his Brazilian counterpart to visit Astana.

Kazakhstan's primary trade ally in South America is Brazil. In 2024, bilateral trade surpassed $257 million, achieving a turnover of $104.2 million in the first quarter of 2025, indicating an 88% rise.

Nurtleu and Vieira affirmed their mutual interest in enhancing collaboration in key sectors.

“We are ready to strengthen our engagement in such areas as agriculture, manufacturing, transport, and logistics. It is essential to identify specific niches for mutually beneficial cooperation,” said Vieira.

The ministers expressed enthusiasm for enhancing collaboration via technology sharing in renewable energy, digital innovation, and cutting-edge technology. They highlighted the agreement between Astana and Brazil on significant global matters and reiterated their shared backing in multilateral forums, such as the UN.

The visit included a roundtable, Brazil-Kazakhstan: Prospects for Cooperation with relevant Brazilian sector associations and businesses. The roundtable event highlighted opportunities for investment and trade, outlined presentations on the market potential of Kazakhstan, and ended with the signing of several bilateral memoranda.

While in Rio de Janeiro, Nurtleu met with senior leaders from Brazil’s leading industrial associations and companies on July 6, including Embraer, Tramontina, Vale, Marcopolo, and Amazul.

During discussions with Ricardo Alban, president of Brazil’s National Confederation of Industry, and Gilberto Petry, vice president of the Confederation and co-chair of the Kazakhstan-Brazil Business Council, Nurtleu explored ways to enhance economic collaboration and invited Brazilian business leaders to join the fourth meeting of the Business Council in Kazakhstan later this year.

Guinter Leonardo Brinkmann, regional director at Tramontina, a leading Brazilian producer of kitchen items and household appliances, declared the firm’s plan to establish a representative office in Almaty.

During discussions with Embraer President Francisco Gomes Neto, the focus was on increasing the company's footprint in Central Asia, identifying Kazakhstan as a viable location for an aircraft maintenance hub.

Kazakhstan and Vale, a worldwide mining firm based in Brazil, have come to an agreement for a delegation visit after discussions with Executive Vice President Sami Arap to explore possible collaboration in the raw materials industry.

During a meeting with Mauro Gilberto Bellini, Vice President of Marcopolo, conversations focused on prospective collaboration in localizing the manufacture of passenger vehicles, which included a plan to assemble buses in Kazakhstan.

Nurtleu highlighted Kazakhstan’s favorable regulatory environment for investors, its strategic position in global transport routes, and its backing for international enterprises. He urged Latin American partners to participate in the Kazakhstan-Brazil Business Council.
