  • Japan pledges $68 billion for India’s clean energy, mobility, semiconductors, and AI sectors.
  • Sojitz and Indian Oil invest $395 million in 30 biogas plants using farm waste.
  • Gujarat’s biogas plants to produce 1.6 million tonnes annually, supporting carbon neutrality.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tokyo, India and Japan strengthened their partnership, focusing on clean energy and sustainable development, despite the recent imposition of 50% U.S. tariffs on Indian exports. At a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, both leaders committed to deepening bilateral ties, with Japan pledging $68 billion in investments across sectors like clean energy, mobility, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence.

A key highlight of the visit was Japan’s push for green technology in India. Sojitz Corporation, in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation, announced a $395 million investment to establish 30 biogas plants. These plants will utilize agricultural residue as feedstock to produce 1.6 million tonnes of compressed biogas annually, promoting rural mobility and supporting India’s carbon neutrality goals.

The joint venture, IOC GPS Renewables Pvt. Ltd., formed by GPS Renewables and Indian Oil, will drive this initiative. Four biogas plants in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, backed by an investment of over ₹200 crore, are set to begin operations this year.

The collaboration aims to reduce India’s reliance on crude oil and curb emissions by leveraging farm waste for clean energy production. This aligns with both nations’ commitment to sustainable development and addressing climate change. The investments also extend to other high-tech areas, reinforcing Indo-Japan ties in innovation and environmental sustainability.

Despite challenges posed by U.S. tariffs, the summit underscored the resilience of the India-Japan partnership, with clean energy emerging as a cornerstone of their cooperation. The initiatives are expected to create economic opportunities in rural India while advancing global environmental goals.
