Turkiye’s Erdoğan and Qatar’s Emir discuss bilateral ties, Gaza, energy security and regional developments at the UN General Assembly, with focus on trade, investment, energy, defence and transportation cooperation.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani discussed bilateral relations, regional developments and international issues during a meeting in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The closed-door meeting focused on strengthening Turkiye-Qatar cooperation across several sectors, including investment, trade, energy and the defence industry. Erdogan said both countries would continue efforts to advance their bilateral relationship in these areas.

Energy security was also a key issue during the discussions. Erdogan highlighted the difficulties created by developments affecting energy supplies in the region and stressed the importance of expanding cooperation on energy and transportation corridors. Qatar’s official account of the meeting said the two leaders also discussed diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating regional tensions and maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation in Gaza featured prominently in the discussions. According to Turkiye’s Communications Directorate, Erdogan said Israel had not taken steps toward peace in Gaza and stressed what he described as the importance of international pressure to curb Israeli military activity in the region.
The talks took place amid broader diplomatic discussions at the UN General Assembly concerning conflicts and security challenges across the Middle East. Qatar and Turkiye have also been involved in regional diplomatic efforts concerning Gaza and de-escalation. Foreign ministers from Qatar, Turkiye and six other Arab and Islamic countries met in New York and expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Several senior Turkish officials attended Erdoğan’s meeting with the Qatari emir, including Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Trade Minister Omer Bolat, intelligence chief İbrahim Kalın and Defence Industry President Haluk Görgün.
The meeting underlined the two countries’ ongoing engagement on economic cooperation, energy security, transportation connectivity and regional diplomatic issues as leaders gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly.
