Egypt and Eritrea discuss expanding economic, trade and investment cooperation, with a focus on priority sectors and stronger coordination on Red Sea security and regional issues.

Egypt and Eritrea are exploring ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, with a focus on expanding trade, investment and private-sector participation in priority areas. The discussions come as the two countries continue efforts to deepen their economic and strategic ties.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks with Hagos Gebrehiwet, Economic Adviser to Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. The meeting highlighted the importance of advancing bilateral cooperation in line with the priorities of the two countries’ leaderships.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s interest in increasing economic and trade relations with Eritrea and encouraging greater investment between the two countries. He also expressed Egypt’s readiness to support the participation of Egyptian companies and the private sector in projects in the Eritrean market.

Priority areas identified during the discussions include energy, industry, infrastructure, trade, fisheries and pharmaceuticals. Egypt also offered to provide technical assistance and training in areas identified as important by Eritrea, reflecting a broader focus on capacity building and knowledge exchange.

The talks build on discussions held between the two countries in September, when Abdelatty and Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh reviewed opportunities to expand bilateral economic cooperation. Egypt highlighted mining, infrastructure, maritime transport, port development and connectivity, pharmaceuticals and fisheries as areas with potential for increased collaboration.

Regional security also remains an important component of Egypt-Eritrea relations. During their September meeting, the two foreign ministers said that the security and governance of the Red Sea are the responsibility of the states bordering it. They also exchanged views on developments in the Horn of Africa, particularly Sudan and Somalia, and agreed to continue consultations on regional issues of common interest.

The latest engagement follows a June meeting between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Cairo. At the meeting, both sides discussed strengthening trade, economic and investment cooperation, as well as coordination on Red Sea security and developments in the Horn of Africa.

Egypt is also preparing to host the El Alamein Africa Forum from October 2 to 4, with Eritrean business leaders and companies invited to participate. The forum is intended to support economic and investment partnerships across Africa.
