Egypt and China agree to broaden security, technology and industrial cooperation, with a focus on counterterrorism, semiconductors, data centres, critical metals, trade, investment and stronger financial connectivity.
Agreement reached on strengthening ties in security, technology and industrial sectors as Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi meets his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Cairo. The meeting comes at a time when both nations are establishing a strategic alliance in changing geopolitical and economic environments in the Middle East region.
The dialogue centres on enhancing bilateral coordination in the realms of security and counterterrorism and also exploring areas of possibility in advanced technology and industries. It aims to broaden the already existing comprehensive strategic partnership between the two sides in addition to developing areas for cooperation in the economic sphere.

The issue of security cooperation is still a vital part of the talks. Egypt and China pledge to enhance their cooperation in the area of security and anti-terrorist matters as they both share an understanding of the importance of solving the problem of regional instability. In addition, both states have stepped up defence cooperation recently.
Technology is yet another sphere where the two sides have pledged cooperation. The two sides will increase cooperation in data centres, semiconductors, and critical metals supply chains. These industries have become increasingly important in digital transformation and industry competitiveness, while access to critical minerals is key to advanced manufacturing and clean energy.
The increase in collaboration in the semiconductor sector will be influenced by the significance of the technology supply chain in today’s world economy. Increased collaboration will help Egypt in fulfilling its plans to improve its digital infrastructure, while at the same time providing an opportunity for Chinese firms to get involved.
Critical metals have also become an important issue as countries aim to obtain dependable sources of raw materials that can be used in electronics, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and other sectors. Cooperation between China and Egypt in this field could lead to stronger supply chains and facilitate industrial growth in both nations.
The economic partnership continues to be the most prominent feature of this relationship. This is because China is the biggest trading partner of Egypt, while companies from China have made significant investments in infrastructure projects, manufacturing industries, green energy, and development in Egypt.
Both countries also address the need to increase the usage of their respective currencies for trade and investments. Increased usage of their currencies could assist in carrying out business dealings between the two countries without relying on foreign currencies.
The cooperation between Egypt and China is part of the wider Egyptian policy of cultivating diversification in its international relationships. Egypt wishes to develop its ties with big powers in the world while adopting the policy of strategic balance, according to President Sisi. On its part, China considers Egypt as a strategic ally due to its geographical location and its importance in the Middle East and Africa.
Another important aspect of regional security plays an equally important role in this broader cooperation. President Xi Jinping urges increased regional independence and backing of a new Middle Eastern security architecture. At the same time, China is ready to cooperate with regional states on protecting international shipping channels. This problem gains special relevance in light of disruptions to sea traffic in the region.

In addition, the visit underlines the significance of China-Egypt relations in the Global South. The two countries stress the need for multilateral collaboration and coordination among developing nations. The collaboration includes infrastructure development, trade, manufacturing, energy, technology, and diplomacy.
These recent conversations therefore reveal that relations between Egypt and China have begun to move away from conventional economic ties. Cooperation on security matters, digital infrastructure, semiconductors, critical minerals, and finance has become an increasingly significant area of the relationship.
Both nations, in their search for greater economic resilience and flexibility, can use this expanded collaboration as a basis for more interaction in the realms of industry and technology. It is anticipated that the collaboration will develop further in areas such as security, technology, investments, and trade between Egypt and China.
