Egypt and the EU discuss strengthening bilateral relations and regional coordination, with talks focusing on developments in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa and efforts to de-escalate tensions.

Egypt and the European Union have discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinate on regional and international issues, with particular attention to developments in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received a telephone call from Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The two officials reviewed Egypt-EU relations and ways to further develop and strengthen the partnership. They also exchanged views on several regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The discussions focused on rapidly evolving developments in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa, including efforts to reduce tensions and prevent conflicts from expanding. Abdelatty and Kallas reaffirmed the importance of respecting state sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity while supporting diplomatic efforts to contain regional crises.

The two sides emphasized the need to intensify regional and international efforts to create conditions conducive to restoring security and stability. They also stressed the importance of continued coordination between Egypt and the European Union in supporting de-escalation efforts and working toward sustainable settlements to regional crises.

The call also highlighted Egypt’s role in regional diplomacy. According to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, the officials recognized Cairo’s role in supporting political and diplomatic solutions and emphasized continued Egyptian-European coordination toward shared objectives of reducing tensions and promoting regional stability.

The latest discussion follows a series of high-level engagements between Egypt and the EU. Their relationship was elevated to a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership in March 2024, covering six priority areas including political relations, economic investment, migration and mobility, security, human development and energy. The partnership is supported by a €7.4 billion financial and investment package for 2024-2027.

In June 2026, Abdelatty and Kallas jointly chaired the 11th Egypt-EU Association Council in Luxembourg. The meeting reaffirmed the multidimensional nature of the strategic partnership and followed the first Egypt-EU summit held in Brussels in October 2025.

Egypt and the EU have also maintained coordination on regional security. The partnership gained an additional security dimension in March 2026 with the launch of the first EU-Egypt Security and Defence Dialogue, providing a dedicated channel for cooperation on shared security challenges.

The latest call reflects the continued focus on strengthening Egypt-EU relations while coordinating diplomatic positions on regional crises, particularly those affecting the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa and wider regional stability.
