Egypt and Burkina Faso discussed strengthening bilateral ties, trade, investment and security cooperation during talks in Cairo. Both sides focused on energy, infrastructure, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, while coordinating on stability and counterterrorism in the Sahel.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore in Cairo on September 1 to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and coordinating on security and stability in the Sahel region.
The meeting builds on the political consultation mechanism established by the two countries in July 2025. Discussions focused on expanding political, economic and security cooperation, with both sides expressing interest in giving greater momentum to bilateral relations.

Economic and investment cooperation was a key focus, particularly in energy, infrastructure, healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Abdelatty also highlighted the importance of the Egyptian-Burkinabe Business Forum, held alongside Traoré’s visit, in generating concrete trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
Security cooperation was another major area of discussion. Egypt reaffirmed its support for Burkina Faso’s efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen national security capabilities. The two countries have already cooperated through training and capacity-building programmes, including initiatives involving Egyptian institutions and Al-Azhar.
The ministers also exchanged views on the wider security situation in West Africa and the Sahel, where Burkina Faso currently chairs the Alliance of Sahel States. Abdelatty stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach combining security measures with development efforts to address terrorism and extremism.
Egypt also expressed its willingness to strengthen coordination with Sahel countries and invited Traore to participate in the sixth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, scheduled to take place in November.

Traore welcomed the growing momentum in Egypt-Burkina Faso relations and praised existing cooperation in counterterrorism, training and institutional capacity building. He also expressed interest in benefiting from Egyptian expertise to strengthen Burkina Faso’s national institutions.
The talks reflect Egypt’s broader efforts to expand its economic and diplomatic engagement across Africa. Stronger cooperation with Burkina Faso could create opportunities for Egyptian companies in infrastructure, energy sector, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and other sectors while supporting closer economic links between North and West Africa.
