Chinese Firm Launches Robotaxi Service in Abu Dhabi

The first commercial Robotaxi service which operates in downtown Abu Dhabi has been launched by Uber and the Chinese autonomous driving company WeRide which marks an important advancement for smart mobility development in the United Arab Emirates.

The announcement was made on Thursday, with the service receiving support from Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Center.

The rollout now covers nearly 70 percent of the capital city which includes its main urban districts together with several important landmarks and busy sections of the city.

Passengers traveling within approved zones can request a self-driving taxi through the Uber app by selecting Uber Comfort, UberX, or choosing the dedicated “Autonomous” ride option.

The Robotaxi vehicles use advanced autonomous driving technology for their operation but maintain a requirement for safety operators to be present in all vehicles.

The companies plan to gradually transition toward fully driverless operations in future phases, as regulatory approvals and operational confidence increase.

The launch demonstrates how Uber and WeRide are building their partnership in the UAE while supporting the country's goal of introducing smart and eco-friendly transportation systems.

According to a cooperation roadmap finalized in February 2026, both companies aim to expand their Robotaxi fleet in the Middle East to at least 1,200 vehicles by 2027.

The upcoming business activities which will include Dubai and Riyadh as operating locations will expand their current base in Abu Dhabi.

WeRide which launched its operations in 2017 focuses on developing autonomous driving technologies which include Robotaxis, Robobuses and advanced driver-assistance systems.

The company has conducted research testing and commercial operations in more than 40 cities across 11 countries. WeRide has already deployed more than 200 Robotaxis in the Middle East which demonstrates its expanding presence in the region's developing transportation industry.
