China and Thailand have agreed to establish a 2+2 Foreign and Defence Minister’s Dialogue, creating a new high-level mechanism to strengthen strategic coordination and expand bilateral cooperation in security, defence, and regional affairs.
The agreement was reached during Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa's visit to Beijing, where he held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The new dialogue framework is expected to elevate bilateral relations by enabling regular consultations between the two countries' foreign and defence ministers on issues of mutual interest.
The 2+2 dialogue mechanism is intended to enhance coordination on regional security challenges, defence cooperation, and broader geopolitical developments. Both sides agreed that closer communication between their diplomatic and defence establishments would contribute to stronger strategic trust and improve their ability to address common security concerns. Officials noted that the mechanism would serve as an important platform for advancing cooperation while reinforcing the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Thailand.

During the discussions, China and Thailand also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration against transnational crimes, including telecom fraud, online scams, cybercrime, and human trafficking. The two countries have intensified cooperation in recent years to combat cross-border criminal networks operating in the region, with both governments recognising the need for closer intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination, and joint operations to address evolving security threats.
The ministers further exchanged views on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges. They highlighted the importance of maintaining stable regional supply chains, promoting infrastructure connectivity, and supporting economic recovery through stronger bilateral engagement. Both countries also reiterated their commitment to working together within regional frameworks such as ASEAN and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation mechanism to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development across Southeast Asia.

The establishment of the new dialogue comes amid growing strategic engagement between China and Southeast Asian nations.
