  • China, South Korea pledge stable supply chains.

  • Rapid coordination planned for disruptions, shortages.

  • Focus on semiconductors, batteries, rare earths.

Cooperation and stability in crucial supply chains between China and South Korea have increased to demonstrate as a result of improved bilateral relations, amid growing uncertainty of commerce and global geopolitics.

The minister of commerce of China, Wang Wentao, and South Korea’s minister of trade, Kim Jung-Kwan held a high-level meeting in Beijing where they both indicated the need for furthering trade and investment cooperation, and co-operatively through safeguarding industrial supply chains.

Concurrently, both countries are experiencing disruptions and changing trade flows, as a result of the West Asia conflict and changing US trade policy. As a result of their discussions, the agreement to enhance rapid communication mechanisms in times of disruption or lack of raw materials between the two countries, to facilitate active channels of coordination in order to manage risk and stabilise supplies.

Furthermore, both nations committed to creating greater certainty and predictability in supply chains, particularly for critical inputs such as rare earths and permanent magnets, which are factors in high technology manufacturing sectors.

Discussions among members of the respective industries have taken place in parallel; China and the Republic of Korea both showed interest in increasing cooperation across key industries of importance for both nations. Specifically, they are exploring ways they can cooperate on semiconductors, lithium battery production, and "silver economy" (i.e., industries geared toward populations with large numbers of senior citizens).

This is part of a larger effort of both countries to work together to align their respective industrial policies, as well as to reduce vulnerability in important technology supply chains.  Restoring cooperation represents an affirmative step concerning the relations between China and Korea, particularly following years of tension in their respective nations.

Both countries believe increased coordination regarding supply chain integration will be a "win-win" since China is South Korea's principal trading partner and, therefore, the two nations must maintain a strong relationship in order for their respective economies and the region as a whole to achieve overall stability.
