Bangladesh, Tajikistan Deepen Ties with New FOC Agreement

Synopsis: Bangladesh and Tajikistan sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Foreign Office Consultations, establishing a formal mechanism to deepen bilateral cooperation across diplomacy, trade, investment, education, and regional affairs.

Bangladesh and Tajikistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Foreign Office Consultations (FOC), establishing a formal framework for regular diplomatic engagement and reinforcing their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation. The agreement was signed ahead of the first-ever Foreign Office Consultations between the two countries held in Dhaka, marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic relations.

The newly signed MoU institutionalizes a structured consultation mechanism that will enable both governments to hold periodic discussions on bilateral relation, regional, and international issues of mutual interest. Officials said the initiative is expected to strengthen political dialogue while creating opportunities to enhance cooperation across sectors including trade, investment, education, culture, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.

During the consultations, the two sides reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and explored ways to broaden engagement in areas such as agriculture sector, energy sectors, tourism, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and capacity building. They also exchanged views on regional developments and reaffirmed their commitment to working together in multilateral forums on issues of shared interest.

Bangladesh expressed its appreciation for Tajikistan's support for its candidature for the Presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Both countries also acknowledged the importance of strengthening cooperation through regular high-level exchanges and institutional dialogue to unlock new avenues for economic and strategic collaboration.

Foreign Office Consultations stand out as a major development and the very first formal bilateral mechanism of this kind for diplomatic contacts between Bangladesh and Tajikistan. Such consultations between the two countries, apart from providing a continuity of diplomatic relations in the future years, also open a door for policy dialogues and cooperation.

Besides developing their bilateral relations, the two countries hope to create an extensive economic relationship as well as tackle shared regional and international problems through consistent dialogue. Negotiators from both sides believed that such an agreement will help to widen and deepen different forms of cooperation between the two countries across various areas.
