- Geleximco and Chery launch $319 million GEL-O&J auto plant in Vietnam.
- Green, smart factory model promotes energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing practices.
- Facility strengthens Vietnam-China collaboration and creates thousands of new automotive jobs.
The Vietnamese conglomerate Geleximco Group and China's Chery Automobile conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for their GEL-O&J auto plant in Hung Yen province. Located in the Hung Phu Industrial Park in the previous Thai Binh province (now included in Hung Yen province following their consolidation in July), the project covers 38.1 hectares with an overall investment of $319 million. The development will occur in two stages from 2025 to 2029.
The site is one of the largest and most sophisticated automobile manufacturing projects in Vietnam, and is notably the first Chinese car assembly facility in the nation. Upon completion, the factory will possess a planned capacity of 120,000 vehicles annually, including essential workshops for welding, painting, assembly, plastic component manufacturing, a logistics center, an expert area, and a test track adhering to European standards.
The facility is constructed based on the “Green Factory - Smart Factory” model, an innovative idea that Chery is currently applying worldwide. It will optimize the use of natural energy, collect rainwater for reuse, recycle wastewater, and utilize sustainable materials.
The production line will incorporate automated technologies and an intelligent management system to improve energy efficiency and minimize emissions. The site will additionally act as the primary production hub for new energy vehicles (NEVs) of Omoda & Jaecoo Automobile, a branch of Chery Automobile.
Omoda & Jaecoo Vietnam presently offers SUV models including Omoda C5, Jaecoo J7, and Jaecoo J7 PHEV (SHS). A provincial representative highlighted that Hung Yen province focuses on high-tech, eco-friendly industrial initiatives aligned with its sustainable development objectives.
A spokesperson from Omoda & Jaecoo Vietnam stated that the building of the Hung Yen facility signifies a key move in the brand’s international growth strategy. The firm is dedicated to sustained investment, rigorous adherence to environmental laws, and the implementation of smart, highly automated manufacturing processes.
Once completely operational, the facility is anticipated to generate thousands of both direct and indirect jobs throughout the supply chain. The creation of the GEL-O&J car factory marks a significant achievement in industrial collaboration between Vietnam and China in advanced technology and highlights Vietnam’s growing importance in the global automotive production framework.
