- Partnership supports green mobility goals while expanding BYD’s manufacturing footprint across Southeast Asia markets regionally.
Kim Long Motor, a Vietnamese automaker, has formed a strategic partnership with Chinese electric vehicle and battery giant BYD to establish an electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant worth $130 million in central Vietnam.
This partnership is a significant move towards developing the EV supply chain in Vietnam and localizing the technology for electric vehicle manufacturing.
According to the deal, the funding for the construction of the battery plant will be provided by Kim Long Motor, while BYD will offer technical support for the establishment of the plant.
The plant is being established at the Kim Long Motor Hue automotive production and assembly industrial park and will help Vietnam reduce its reliance on imported batteries, which are a crucial component of EVs.
The first stage of the plant will span about 4.4 hectares with an annual production capacity of 3 gigawatt-hours (GWh), which will be adequate to meet the local demand for batteries used in commercial electric vehicles such as buses, trucks, and mini-buses.

There are also plans to expand the plant in a second stage, which will increase the size of the plant to 10 hectares with a production capacity of 6 GWh per year, including batteries for electric passenger cars.
In addition to production capacity, the collaboration is also expected to have an important role in the development of the EV industry in Vietnam.
Through the collaboration with BYD, Kim Long Motor hopes to have expertise in battery technology, which is widely considered one of the most important factors for EV performance. The collaboration is also in line with the industry’s goal to increase the use of EVs and establish a manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia.
Overall, this collaboration highlights Vietnam’s push to strengthen domestic EV supply chains and underscores BYD’s growing global footprint.
