Vietnam and Finland are expanding cooperation in strategic technologies, AI, 5G, digital infrastructure and data centres to advance innovation, workforce development and Vietnam’s digital transformation.

Vietnam and Finland are strengthening cooperation in science, technology, innovation and digital infrastructure, with both countries exploring opportunities in strategic technologies, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI) and data centre development. The discussions took place during a meeting between Vietnam’s Minister of Science and Technology, Vu Hai Quan, and Finland’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, Ville Tavio, in Hanoi.

The two ministers reviewed existing cooperation and discussed ways to develop new initiatives in research, innovation and digital transformation. Vu Hai Quan highlighted the Vietnam-Finland Innovation Partnership Programme, which has supported startup projects, workforce training and the development of Vietnam’s innovation ecosystem.

Both sides considered reviewing existing cooperation frameworks and introducing new programmes focused on developing highly skilled professionals, strengthening research capabilities and advancing strategic technologies. Areas with potential for collaboration include telecommunications, radio-frequency management, 5G networks, digital infrastructure, high technology and AI.

Data centre development emerged as a key area of discussion. Vietnam aims to establish itself as a regional data centre hub serving Southeast Asia and broader Asian markets. Cooperation with Finnish technology companies could support digital infrastructure development and help meet growing demand for computing capacity and data services.

The discussions align with broader efforts to translate the Vietnam-Finland Strategic Partnership, established in 2025, into practical projects and business opportunities. Both countries have identified digital transformation, AI, semiconductor technology, next-generation telecommunications and green technologies as areas for deeper cooperation.

Finland’s ongoing engagement with Vietnam also covers sustainable energy, smart cities, green industrial development and digital connectivity. During his October visit, Tavio was scheduled to meet Vietnamese ministries and business representatives to explore opportunities for partnerships involving Finnish companies and Vietnamese enterprises.

The renewed engagement is expected to encourage research collaboration, technology partnerships and skills development while supporting Vietnam’s ambitions to modernise its digital economy. By combining Finland’s technological expertise with Vietnam’s expanding digital infrastructure needs, both countries are seeking to deepen economic ties and promote innovation-driven growth.
