Thailand is set to strengthen economic and regional connectivity with Malaysia by opening a new permanent border crossing at the Sadao checkpoint in Songkhla province on July 11. Approved by the Thai Cabinet, the new crossing is designed to improve cross-border trade, streamline logistics, facilitate tourism, and support investment between the two neighbouring countries. The initiative reflects Thailand's broader strategy of enhancing transport infrastructure and promoting stronger economic cooperation within the ASEAN region.
The new checkpoint, located between boundary markers 23/9 and 23/10, will replace the existing Sadao border crossing situated between markers 22 and 23. It will operate daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., providing extended access for commercial transport, private vehicles, and tourists travelling between Thailand and Malaysia. Authorities expect the upgraded facility to significantly improve traffic movement while reducing congestion at one of the busiest land borders connecting the two nations.

To ensure the smooth functioning of the new checkpoint, the Thai government has instructed relevant agencies to accelerate supporting infrastructure projects. These include completing connecting roads, easing traffic bottlenecks around the border area, and introducing shuttle services to improve accessibility. Provincial authorities in Songkhla have also been tasked with monitoring the progress of these developments to ensure the checkpoint becomes fully operational without delays.
The government is also focusing on public awareness to facilitate a seamless transition to the new border facility. Businesses, logistics operators, transport companies, and local communities will receive detailed information on revised traffic routes, customs procedures, immigration processes, and other operational guidelines. Officials believe these measures will minimise disruptions while enabling faster customs clearance and more efficient cross-border movement of goods and travellers.
The opening of the new Sadao checkpoint comes ahead of the Thai Prime Minister's official visit to Malaysia, where discussions are expected to focus on expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, border connectivity, tourism, and regional collaboration. The upgraded crossing is anticipated to serve as a key gateway for enhancing economic integration, encouraging tourism, and supporting sustainable growth for both countries while reinforcing long-term Thailand–Malaysia relations.
