Tajikistan and Turkmenistan discuss expanding their strategic partnership, focusing on trade, transport connectivity, logistics, energy cooperation and cultural ties during a meeting between their presidents in Awaza.
Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon and Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedow discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations during a meeting in Awaza, Turkmenistan, on October 8, 2026. The talks focused on expanding trade, improving transport and logistics links, developing energy cooperation and strengthening political dialogue between the two Central Asian countries.
Rahmon thanked the Turkmen leadership for the invitation and hospitality. Both presidents noted the steady development of relations and expressed interest in further deepening their strategic partnership. They also highlighted the importance of cultural and humanitarian exchanges in supporting cooperation between their countries.

The discussions covered trade and economic relations, transport and transit infrastructure, and collaboration in the fuel and energy sector. The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, reflecting their shared interest in maintaining regular political engagement and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
The meeting took place alongside major regional gatherings in Awaza, including the eighth Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia and Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Council of Heads of State meeting.
During the regional summit, Rahmon called for identifying priority energy projects, developing mechanisms for joint financing and preparing a regional green transition strategy. He also urged countries to accelerate the adoption of digital and green technologies, encourage innovation and expand the use of artificial intelligence in industry.
The Tajik president further emphasised the need to strengthen regional supply chains, promote joint production and export projects, and improve transport routes connecting Central Asia and Azerbaijan with international markets. He highlighted cooperation on climate change, melting glaciers, water shortages and dust storms as important regional priorities because of their implications for environmental sustainability and food security.

The meeting underscores Tajikistan and Turkmenistan’s efforts to broaden economic and infrastructure cooperation while supporting wider regional connectivity.
