- Taiwan and Japan strengthen cooperation in drone technology and secure industrial supply chains.
- Fifteen agreements signed covering autonomous drones, disaster response, and advanced technology development initiatives.
- Japan seeks reliable Taiwanese drone components amid expanding domestic production and security strategies.
Taiwan and Japan are strengthening their drone industry collaboration because both countries want to develop secure advanced technology supply chains which can withstand disruptions. Recent reports show that Taiwanese and Japanese drone companies along with industry organizations have increased their collaborative efforts during the last few years because of rising regional security threats and growing need for non-Chinese technology components.
Over the past six years, at least 15 cooperation agreements have been signed between Taiwanese and Japanese institutions involved in drone technology development. The partnerships include organisations such as Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, the Japan Drone Consortium, and the Japan UAS Industry Development Association. The agreements target two main areas which include supply chain development and three specific technologies which are autonomous flight systems and disaster prevention systems and emergency response applications and drone deployment strategies.
The growing partnership between the two countries shows Japan's commitment to decrease its reliance on Chinese unmanned aerial vehicle parts and build its own production abilities. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced plans to produce 80,000 domestically made drones by 2030 as part of broader supply chain resilience initiatives. The Japanese capital is developing partnerships with countries that share its values to obtain necessary components which include batteries motors, communication systems and flight controllers.

The Taiwanese government has developed strong partnerships with Japan because Taiwan has developed expert skills in drone manufacturing and electronics production. Analysts confirmed that Taiwanese companies maintain high standards of reliability while demonstrating strong production capabilities through their delivery of drone technologies to Eastern European and Ukrainian markets. Japan has chosen Taiwan as its drone development partner because Taiwan offers low manufacturing expenses and operates a supply chain that does not face restrictions.
Taiwanese companies actively pursue stronger ties with Japanese businesses through their current partnership efforts. Chiayi-based 7A Drones recently signed agreements with Japanese companies AlterSky and Autonomy HD to jointly develop large-scale logistics drones and integrate Taiwan-Japan drone industrial supply chains. The projects will drive forward innovation because they focus on developing autonomous drone technologies and their practical uses in business operations.
The increasing momentum faces obstacles according to experts who study its progress. The Japanese drone industry needs two major improvements which analysts specifically identified as its current manufacturing capacity and its incomplete domestic industrial system. Taiwanese enterprises face challenges when they attempt to find appropriate partners for their technology projects and government initiatives.
Trade data demonstrates Taiwan's increasing importance in the industry. Taiwan exported 45 drones to Japan in 2025, while Japan exported only three drones to Taiwan during the same period. Taiwan delivered over 120,000 drones to various countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic and the United States, which demonstrates its growing presence in the international drone supply chain.
