Following the meeting, Barrack said the discussions covered shared priorities in addressing regional threats. He described Syria as an important component of the wider Middle East situation and indicated that the current regional environment presented an opportunity to address longstanding challenges. Al-Shaibani also described the meeting as productive, saying the two sides reviewed key priorities, exchanged perspectives and explored possible ways to move forward.

The meeting follows earlier contacts between Syrian and US officials aimed at maintaining dialogue on bilateral relations and regional issues. On September 22, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met Barrack on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with al-Shaibani also attending. The two sides have continued discussions through meetings in Turkiye and other diplomatic engagements.

During an earlier meeting in Istanbul on August 17, al-Shaibani and Barrack discussed ways to improve bilateral relations and reviewed developments across the region. Their agenda also included Syria’s economic recovery, the lifting of sanctions and efforts to advance reconstruction. These issues remain important to Syria’s efforts to rebuild its economy and strengthen international engagement.
