In order to build a 500 MW solar module factory by 2028 with plans to scale to gigawatt capacity by 2035, Germany-based Sonnex Energie has teamed up with Solar EPC Development in Bangladesh to form Sonnex Energie Bangladesh. According to company officials, the facility which was unveiled at a signing ceremony in Dhaka will include automated assembly plants, cutting-edge testing labs, and technical training centers tailored to the solar industry.
Along with expanded after-sales and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) networks to guarantee long-term system performance and customer satisfaction, the venture will also build local logistics hubs and warehousing to improve supply chain resilience. Eric Lee, managing director of Sonnex Energie Asia, told PV Magazine, “The establishment of a 500 MW solar module manufacturing facility in Bangladesh will strengthen the company’s positioning in Asia while contributing to the local economy and the global clean energy transition.”
"Establishing local manufacturing and assembly plants will cut import reliance, lower tariff and transport costs, and boost supply chain resilience," said Ezaz Al Qudrat A. Mazid, managing director of Solar EPC Development Ltd., underscoring the strategic advantages. The initiative's goal, he continued, is to establish Bangladesh as a center for solar manufacturing for both domestic and international markets.
According to the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, this action is in line with Bangladesh's renewable energy targets, which call for 40% clean energy by 2041. The nation is growing renewables to meet growing energy demands, with solar capacity projected to reach 1.2 GW in 2024 (IRENA data). Local production could boost the economy by creating jobs and reducing dependency on imported modules, which control 90% of the market. In line with global efforts to use sustainable energy, the factory’s up-to-date facilities will support inventions and training sites will enhance the knowledge of local workers.
Sonnex Energie is using a regional hub in Bangladesh to gain an advantage in exporting to nearby countries, make its products more affordable and promote the worldwide use of clean energy.
