- Singapore becomes first in Southeast Asia to implement nationwide deposit return scheme for beverage containers.
- Scheme encourages recycling by offering refunds for returned plastic bottles and cans through collection systems.
- Initiative aims to reduce waste, improve recycling rates, and promote circular economy and environmental sustainability nationwide.
Singapore has achieved its first environmental sustainability goal through its establishment of a nationwide deposit return scheme for single-use beverage containers which makes it the first country in Southeast Asia to implement such a system.
The Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) which began its operations on April 1 2026 aims to increase recycling rates while decreasing waste and supporting a circular economy.
The scheme encourages consumers to return their used plastic bottles and metal cans through designated collection points which offer a small deposit refund. The installation of reverse vending machines at supermarkets and public spaces and high-traffic areas enables users to access the system with convenience.
The machines enable users to return their eligible containers and obtain digital refunds which help maintain proper material sorting and recycling procedures.

The program exists to resolve Singapore's waste disposal problems which arise from the yearly generation of large amounts of packaging waste. The government plans to implement a financial reward system which will motivate consumers to adopt responsible waste disposal practices while decreasing the amount of recyclable materials that are contaminated.
The system will achieve two main objectives when it operates by improving the collection of valuable recyclable materials and decreasing the volume of waste that needs incineration and landfill disposal.
The BCRS functions through its extended producer responsibility framework which requires beverage producers to finance and operate the system. The system establishes supply chain accountability while it helps to sustain the initiative over time.
The program has been designed to Singapore's urban area through the integration of technology and infrastructure together with public involvement which creates an effective recycling system.
The launch of the deposit return scheme establishes Singapore as a regional leader in circular economy practices. The country seeks to establish a sustainable future through its policy and innovation and public engagement efforts while serving as a model for other Southeast Asian countries.
