  • Saudi Arabia and Qatar sign a high-speed rail link agreement.
  • Project cuts travel to two hours, boosting tourism, trade, and jobs.
  • Eco-friendly rail reduces emissions and strengthens GCC regional connectivity.

Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, along with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, observed the signing of an agreement for a high-speed electric passenger railway project linking the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar, highlighting the strong fraternal and historical ties between both nations.

The contract was endorsed by Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser and Qatar's Minister of Transport Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani as part of the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council, marking a strategic move focused on boosting collaboration, developmental integration, and sustainable progress, as well as showcasing a mutual dedication to regional prosperity, according to SPA.

The high-speed train route extends 785 kilometers, effectively linking the capitals Riyadh and Doha, and will traverse important stations such as Hofuf and Dammam, while also connecting King Salman International Airport with Hamad International Airport. The train will create a new channel for fast and sustainable transportation, enhancing regional travel with speeds over 300 kilometers per hour, cutting travel time between the two capitals to about two hours, greatly increasing mobility, promoting trade and tourism, and elevating quality of life.

The project is expected to finish in six years, employing advanced railway technologies and intelligent engineering to guarantee safe and smooth operation while meeting the highest global standards of safety and quality. An economic effect of close to SAR115 billion on the GDP of both nations is anticipated, along with serving over 10 million travelers each year and generating more than 30,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

The high-speed railway will aid environmental sustainability by lowering carbon emissions and facilitating the shift towards more efficient and innovative transportation models for smart and sustainable mobility in the area. This positions the rail line as one of the most crucial strategic initiatives aiding regional growth and enhancing connectivity and integration among the Gulf Cooperation Council nations.
