Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met German Ambassador to Iraq Daniel Krebber in Erbil, with the two sides discussing bilateral relations, Germany’s support for the Peshmerga forces and regional developments.

During the meeting, Barzani and Krebber reviewed ways to strengthen relations between the Kurdistan Region and Germany. The discussions also covered cooperation between the two sides and developments in Iraq and the wider region.

Germany has been an important international partner of the Kurdistan Region in supporting the Peshmerga. German assistance has included military equipment, training and advisory support as part of international efforts to strengthen the capabilities of Kurdish forces in the fight against terrorism.

The meeting comes as the Kurdistan Region continues efforts to advance the institutionalization and unification of its security forces. The Peshmerga Ministry has been working with international partners, including Germany, on reforms aimed at strengthening the command structure and improving coordination between different units.

Barzani and Krebber also exchanged views on the political and security situation in Iraq. The discussions come amid broader efforts by the Iraqi federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to address outstanding political, administrative and economic issues.

Germany has maintained diplomatic and development engagement with the Kurdistan Region for years, with cooperation extending beyond security to areas including economic development, humanitarian assistance, education and institutional capacity building.
