Synopsis: The Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association urges the Civil Aviation Ministry and DGCA to suspend flights to the UAE and Gulf nations, citing escalating security risks arising from the ongoing West Asia conflict.
The Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) has urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to immediately suspend commercial flight operations to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf destinations, citing growing safety concerns amid the escalating conflict in West Asia. The association has called for an urgent review of aviation operations to safeguard passengers, flight crews and aircraft operating in the region.
In its representation to the aviation authorities, the pilots’ body states that the rapidly evolving security situation has significantly increased the risks associated with civilian aviation in the Gulf region. It argues that the possibility of missile attacks, drone activity and sudden airspace restrictions warrants immediate precautionary measures until a comprehensive security assessment is completed.

The association stresses that passenger and crew safety must remain the highest priority and recommends temporarily suspending flights to destinations considered vulnerable to the ongoing conflict. It also calls on the DGCA to continuously monitor the situation and issue updated operational guidance based on evolving security assessments.
The appeal comes as international aviation authorities continue to raise concerns over the deteriorating security environment in parts of the Middle East. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has recently advised airlines to avoid operating in the airspace of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and the Gulf of Oman, warning that missile attacks drone operations and military activity pose significant risks to civilian aircraft. Separate advisories against flying over Iran, Iraq and Lebanon also remain in effect.
The pilots’ body notes that aviation safety decisions should be guided by operational risk rather than commercial considerations. It argues that temporary flight suspensions, if required, would represent a preventive measure aimed at avoiding potential threats until conditions improve and normal operations can safely resume. Similar concerns have previously been raised by international pilot organisations, which have advocated giving pilots greater authority to decline operations into conflict zones without facing professional repercussions.

The request also reflects growing uncertainty surrounding air travel across West Asia as geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt established flight corridors and prompt frequent changes to airline routing. Several carriers have already adjusted schedules, rerouted flights or reviewed operations in response to evolving regional developments.
The association has urged the Civil Aviation Ministry and the DGCA to take swift action by conducting a detailed security review and implementing appropriate operational measures. It maintains that a proactive approach will help minimise risks to civil aviation while ensuring that the safety of passengers and flight personnel remains paramount during the ongoing regional crisis.
