The Philippines and Indonesia agree to accelerate a five-year cooperation plan covering trade, investment, maritime security, border management, defence modernisation and regional diplomacy.

The Philippines and Indonesia have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations through expanded cooperation in maritime security, border management, trade, investment and regional diplomacy. The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro and Indonesia’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Arrmanatha “Tata” Christiawan Nasir in Manila.

Nasir visited the Philippines for an introductory meeting following his appointment as Indonesia’s foreign minister in October. Both ministers reviewed the progress of bilateral relations and highlighted the longstanding historical, cultural and geographical ties between the two maritime neighbours, which are also founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The discussions included the outcomes of the eighth Philippines-Indonesia Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation, held in Jakarta on April 23, 2026. Both sides agreed to accelerate the adoption of a new five-year Plan of Action to provide a framework for strengthening cooperation across several areas.

The proposed plan will cover political and economic relations, maritime security, border management, boundary delimitation, legal and consular affairs, development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and people-to-people exchanges. The framework is expected to guide joint initiatives and improve coordination between the two governments.

Economic engagement was another important component of the discussions. The two countries are exploring opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investment, including cooperation in the energy sector to strengthen regional supply chain resilience. Indonesia also expressed readiness to support the Philippines' defence modernisation efforts and share expertise in developing the halal industry.

The ministers also discussed consular cooperation and the protection of their respective nationals. These efforts reflect the importance of strengthening institutional coordination and addressing issues affecting citizens living and working in both countries.

Regional and international developments were also discussed, particularly within ASEAN and the United Nations. Both sides emphasised the need to maintain ASEAN unity, centrality and inclusiveness while addressing regional challenges. They exchanged views on tackling transboundary haze and supporting meaningful progress towards resolving the crisis in Myanmar.

Lazaro welcomed Indonesia's continued support for the Philippines' ASEAN chairmanship and its preparations for the 49th ASEAN Summit, scheduled for November 16-18, 2026, in Manila.

The Philippines and Indonesia established diplomatic relations on November 24, 1949, and will mark 77 years of formal ties in 2026. Their latest discussions underline their intention to expand cooperation across economic, security and diplomatic priorities while supporting regional peace and stability.
